Deep in the Höllental valley in the Upper Black Forest lies a spectacular rock formation that has captured people's imagination for centuries: the Hirschsprung. The narrow gorge, which is flanked by steep rock faces, was not only a strategically important passage, but is also the setting for an old legend. Here you can find out what the Hirschsprung is all about, how to get there and what you can experience around this natural monument.

The legend of Hirschsprung

According to legend, a stag was pursued by hunters and stood on the edge of a deep ravine. At the last second, he leapt to his rescue - and made it to the other side with a mighty leap! Today, a striking statue of the stag stands on a rocky outcrop above the road as a reminder.

Why it's worth a visit

  • Spectacular nature: The narrow rock faces of the Höllental valley are breathtaking and offer impressive photo opportunities.
  • A place steeped in history: Once a dangerous passage for travellers, today a popular stopping point for hikers and tourists.
  • Perfect for a break: Whether travelling through or as a hiking destination - the Hirschsprung is ideal for a short break and a look at the fascinating natural scenery.

Hiking around the Hirschsprung

Several hiking trails lead through the Höllental valley and offer marvellous views:

  • Hike from Hinterzarten to Hirschsprung (approx. 5 km): A beautiful trail through forest and gorge with a moderate ascent.
  • Panorama trail through the Höllental valley: Ideal for anyone who wants to experience the impressive landscape from different perspectives.

Arrival & Parking

Hirschsprung is located on the B31 between Freiburg and Titisee-Neustadt. Parking is available along the road or in Hinterzarten. Alternatively, you can take the train to Hinterzarten, from where it is a nice walk to Hirschsprung.
